WoERTC 2023 Season Kick-off

It’s that time of year again - LET’S RIDE BIKES!

The 2023 Women of ERTC season is (hopefully) off to an early start. All signs are pointing to starting up next week (April 17th), weather permitting, and will continue through until the end of September. Here are some key things you need to know about our season:

  • We ride weekly on Monday evenings, and vary our rides between 5 or 6 regular routes. Everything you need to know about our rides is here.

  • Our first 2023 ride will be Monday April 17, 2023, meeting in the FreshCo parking lot of the Millbourne Mall. Meet at 6pm for intros, rolling out to ride at 6:15pm. Very casual pace for our first ride, and approximately 35km (or shorter depending on riders).

    • The route is half city riding (on Millwoods Road) and half country roads. We will repeat this route the next week to offer familiarity for newer riders.

    • If you have never group ridden before, we recommend taking the ERTC Rider Development course that starts April 25th first before joining group rides. More on this course option coming soon.

  • All our WoERTC ride information is confirmed weekly on Slack. Join the ERTC Slack here, and then direct message Tiffany Baker to be added to the WoERTC channel.

  • Are you a previous WoERTC rider (and currently an ERTC member)? We would love to have you out on our first few rides to support those new to riding.

  • Looking for leads and sweeps.

    • If you are a confident rider and have previous ride leading experience, we would love to have you help lead our WoERTC rides, even if just a few rides a season.

    • If you’re comfortable group riding and keeping things organized, we would love to have you help sweep our WoERTC rides. Sweeps ride at the back and help keep the group together and ensure the ride leader is aware of any issues.

    • Interested? Email Tiffany Baker

Cross your fingers that the usual freak April snow-storm takes a holiday this year - so we can start riding bikes soon! Looking forward to riding with you all.

ERTC - New Year Update

Hey everyone! Greetings from not Edmonton ;) This will be the final email for the 2022 mailing list so if you want to stay subscribed with updates and happenings, please sign up.

  1. Signups are now open (and working!) over at https://zone4.ca/reg.asp?id=30802 The fee is now $125 for the year. I would definitely sign up prior to the riding season start as we are having some events prior to the start of the season that you don’t want to miss out on!

  2. Speaking of social events, let us know what you want to see in 2023! Here is a poll: https://forms.gle/rbhkfAYPqR9jCnBG6

  3. The Rogelli webstore is live and always open 24/7. CHECK OUT THE ROGELLI WEBSTORE HERE: https://www.rogellicanada.com/ertc This means orders will be taken all year round with three order cut-off periods during the year- Jan 30th, April 30th and June 30th.  These dates were arranged to ensure clothing orders will arrive around the spring, summer, and fall riding seasons. For example: orders placed within the Jan 30th webstore cut-off date would arrive at your door in early April.  Rogelli has indicated that sourcing of inputs and production turnaround time has improved to approximately 8 weeks from order cut-off.  So the April cut-off would arrive in June and June cut-off would arrive in September, etc.

Note: a minimum of 10 items is needed at each cut-off date for the clothing orders to be submitted to production (excluding base layers and hoodies). If there are less than 10 items, then these outstanding items will be carried forward to the next cut-off date so the minimum order limit of 10 items can be reached.

  4. We also have all of our float inventory available for immediate purchase on the ETRC site here: http://www.ertc.org/teamkit Place and pay for an order on our site with immediate curbside pick-up of bibs, jerseys and accessories at Michael’s place in Bonnie Doon. He will contact you when you place an order. DM him if you don’t hear from him.

New Slack Rules

Hey everyone, in order to better utilise slack, we will be instituting new rules to keep it organized and easy to use.

  1. Anyone may make a post in any channel other than #announcements

  2. All replies to top level posts MUST be replies. This may be relaxed in less busy channels or the banter channels but for default channels will be enforced fully.

  3. Any replies that are not will be deleted, regardless of content. We may choose to inform you that your reply was deleted, or post for you in a thread.

  4. Please be kind and respectful to your fellow cyclists and friends. We’ve chosen to be somewhat vague about this because context matters.

  5. Swearing in the General channel is discouraged. This is where members come to get information on rides and club happenings.

  6. This will be effective immediately.

Remember to join slack here: https://join.slack.com/t/edmontonroada-7u36621/shared_invite/zt-1nbaif110-O06ZlscJLVacJrOJI9TxXg

ERTC - Year End Update

Hi All,

Happy Holidays everyone, and this is your year end update, chock full of goodies! Attached to this email is a copy of our 2022 AGM Meeting Minutes. If you have any questions, just email / DM me or ask in slack.

  • ERTC registration will be live on January 1, 2023. The price for registration has been increased to $125 to keep up with rising inflation costs. We continue to operate on a yearly break even basis. You can register here. https://zone4.ca/reg.asp?id=30802

  • We are welcoming a new treasurer, Mike Christ, as Graham Watts has stepped down from this position. A little about him in his own words:

I have been a practising accountant since 2007. I was designated as a CPA in 2015. I have held positions in Audit, Financial Reporting, Capital Planning, and now Financial Management for Finning Canada here in Edmonton. I was Treasurer and Board Chair for Finance at the Greater Bragg Creek Trails Association from 2016 to 2019. One of the efforts I led was to raise $1.2M in funding for the construction of the new section of the TransCanada Trail for the Hamlet of Bragg Creek.

I am a cycling and cross country ski fanatic and joined ERTC to be a part of the Edmonton cycling community.

I look forward to facilitating the efforts of ERTC as it continues its great work.

Mike has already facilitated several changes with our finances. ERTC has now invested $35000 in Guaranteed Investment Certificates (GICs) which will guarantee a 4% annual return with little risk (read - if we lose it, we have a lot more to worry about, like the collapse of the banking system). This leaves us with enough operating capital to carry on our operations for 2023 while giving us an additional income stream. We may redeem the GIC at any given time, with no penalties other than lost interest. Mike has also led the way in setting up electronic funds transfer with multiple authorizers. Refunds and payments to members and other entities should be much faster.

  • ERTC will be facilitating Cross Country Ski Lessons. The cost will not be covered by ERTC, however the cost is extremely reasonable. The coach will be Jay Smith, a certified CANSI instructor. Read more about her in her own words:

Jay Smith is a CANSI and NCCP-certified cross-country skiing instructor. She has skied competitively for a decade and co-founded YEG Nordic, a master's race team. She is also an accomplished runner and cyclist.

The idea for these lessons will be small groups, ideally 4-5 people so you may get semi-private instruction, however you may also hire her for private lessons through us. The package would be something like 4 lessons of 1.5 hours, for $110 per person (approximately). There would be 2 levels of instruction, one for less than 10 hours of total XC ski experience and one with more than 10 hours of total experience. Lessons would be 2 classic, and 2 skate, however this split may be weather and participant dependent. You are welcome to sign up but only show up for classic or only show up for skate (the cost will not change). The dates and times are subject to the individuals of the group and up for negotiation. Please indicate your interest here: https://forms.gle/GYYum3TiRcA8Leab9

ERTC Weekly Update - Week of October 17

Hey Everyone!

As the season winds down, so do my regular emails (at least that’s my excuse). I’ll be moving to biweekly e-mails.

Some announcements:

  1. Saturday rides are now over for the season - one look at the forecast and you’ll know why ;)

  2. This Thursday will be the final regular Thursday ride of the season - It will be one of the last nice days in the forecast. Join us for some Zoo Hill repeats (as this is all we have time for and the final Thursday Rosso of the year.

  3. Cross is continuing with 2 weekends left of cross down in Calgary - if you have cross leanings, I’m sure you know where to look for information!

  4. The ERTC AGM will be some time in November - usually mid-late November after we have sent out the annual survey and formulated a plan to address any issues that you’ve told us about.

  5. Check out pictures from the Croken Classic here: https://www.alexanderpatton.com/Sports/Cycling/Croken-Classic-2022/

ERTC Weekly Update - Week of October 2

Hey everyone! Missed last week’s update cause… things but I’m back this week! (Let’s be real, did anyone notice?)  Welcome to fall riding, aka the best season for riding!

  1. We are now recruiting hard for volunteers for the Croken Classic, our final event of the year. Thankfully our requirements are fairly low. It happens out at Pigeon Lake - check out the volunteer sign-up here: volunteersignup.org/EXQ3K - we would love someone who can grill and hold down the fort while everyone is out riding.

  2. The Croken Classic Gravel Race is now live and accepting registrants. Tell your gravel curious friends. No race license required! No ABA Club Membership either, but everyone getting this email is one ;) Want to know more or register? https://www.ertc.org/crokenclassic the weather is looking amazing, but the Croken Classic is an “All-Weather” event ;)

  3. Thursday rides are still going strong, although to do hills after Legislature you will need lights.

  4. Weekend rides will go as long as there is interest, however many of our ride leaders prefer riding cross. Not interested in cross but interested in continuing to ride on the weekends? Be a ride leader! Let me know if you are interested, as there are definitely people who prefer the smoothness of pavement to grass!

  5. YEG Cross continues this week: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1635190320143436

  6. Wednesday Night Worlds is at Capilano this week at 7:00pm. ERTC Folks can race for free (I’ve already paid for you!) (Keep your eyes peeled, I have a feeling Kurt will push this to 6:30 this week)

ERTC Weekly Update - Week of September 12

Hey Everyone!

As usual, when there is only 6 days left till one of our races (IT’S THIS WEEKEND!!! AAHHHHHHHHH), I will dedicate the entire intro to begging for help.

We need at least 1 first aider and ideally 2 (so that we have shifts or can race), who are comfortable with treating wounds and maybe making a sling for a broken collarbone. Everything else we will call 911 for. We also need course marshals, which sit at crossings with trails and are able to stop walkers and other trail users for a bit of time so that racers can come through.

Volunteer Signup here: volunteersignup.org/DBFX8

Late night update cause folks like me are productive only after 11pm!

Alright I can’t say enough good things about cross. Just do it. But if you tire of your 33mm tyres, ERTC will be running Thursday Hill Repeats at the very least until the snow flies.

ERTC Weekly Update - Week of August 15

Welcome to the dog days of summer, where it’s hot, sweaty and you start thinking about riding around in circles in grass. Cyclocross is a great way to recharge from the summer road season, with regular midweek short races, and longer, accessible weekend races. My suggestion is for everyone to come out to a Wednesday Night Race and see what it’s all about. You don’t need to race the first time - just take in the absurdity of 200 people of all ages and ability levels riding around in circles in grass!

Club Updates:

  1. Thursday hill road rides go until the snow flies.

  2. Interested in cross but don’t know where to start? Join the #cross-is-coming slack channel here: https://edmontonroada-7u36621.slack.com/archives/C03TPTGKZT4 for all updates and ask all of your CX related questions there!

Be a ride leader! Let me know if you are interested, as there are definitely people who prefer the smoothness of pavement to grass!

  4. Tuesdays will be switching over to cross based intervals and skills run in conjunction with YEGCross. YEGCross is an interclub initiative led by Robin Baillie - you can find more information here https://www.facebook.com/groups/1635190320143436 - The first YEGCross interval workout will be held at Kinsmen Park at 6pm. Come with at least 20 minutes of warm up before 6:00. We will be working on holding skill-based sessions in the coming weeks.

  5. Wednesday night cross will be starting August 24, pending permits. I’ll throw up links as they become available.
