Members

The ERTC was formed in 1975, and many of the founding members are still involved with the club today. After a season or two of riding with the club, our members realize that the ERTC is much more than a club to help you get fit and win races.

Cameron Mcknight
Cameron started road racing with ERTC in 1999 as a junior. Crossing over from mountain biking, Cameron discovered why people actually liked riding those 'funny look'n skinny tire bikes'. Since then, he has honed his racing skills winning provincial races as well as racing with the Provincial and National teams. Cameron has recently graduated from the UofA with a B.Sc. in Kinesiology and is continuing to pursue his racing goals. His favourite race is the criterium.

Paul Ignatiuk

After taking 3 years off racing to go to school, Paul started racing again in 2002. I graduated from Engineering Physics at the U of A and now work in the MEMs industry. I love long rides on any type of bicycle, though hammering through single-track on a cyclocross bike is also a blast. I am engaged to be married this summer to my lovely fiancee in Montreal.

Kevin Rokosh

I’m a ‘retired’ electrical engineer, who is now working hard as a stay-at-home dad and the ERTC Treasurer. I began bike racing in 1984, placing second in the Palm Dairies “Ice Cream Classic” Novice race, which was held on our current Canada Day Criterium course. Then, after a long hiatus of earning my EE degree at the U of A, and carving out a living as a radar engineer in Ottawa, I finally jumped back into bike racing in 1997, getting my re-start on the same crit course in Ottawa that Gord Fraser began his career on. Since arriving back in Edmonton, I have devoted more serious time to training, and can finally consistently ride sub-one-hour 40km time trials. I’m looking forward to a long career as a Master racer, and giving the young pups a run for their money in Cat 1/2 races!

David Ariano

I started road racing in 2002. I finished 3rd at the Ardrossan stage race road race Category 4 in my first race. I was 2nd at the Mink Lake road race and advanced to Category 3 in the same year.

In 2003 I was Provincial Category 3 champion with a win at the Mink Lake road course. In 2004 I raced Category 2 and the best finish I had was 9th at the Pigeon Lake road race. I prefer the road race to the time trial and will try out the track this year. I'm looking forward to racing as a Master B at Nationals and the World Masters Games this summer. I work as an ER physician and am the father of twin girls and we are expecting a 3rd sometime in July.

Lloyd Kupchanko

Lloyd has been an ERTC club member since 1984 when he started road racing. Lloyd's best races in 1997 were winning the Mink Lake Spring Classic Road Race and the Saskatoon Stage Race Criterium. Lloyd works as a software developer.

Jere started road racing in an effort to get in shape for mountain bike racing, but quickly abandoned the mountain biking in favour of a full-time pursuit of road cycling. His favorite races are any that include climbing. As for training, his favorite rides are the city hill circuit or the 6+ hour Calmar bakery rides. Jere has completed his Masters of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and plans to pursue a Ph.D. degree at the University of Alberta. Off the bike, Jere enjoys golf, tennis, and eating.

Dan Wood

Dan joined ERTC in 1994, and his previous highlights included being on Team Alberta for three years and multiple race wins in Western Canada. He also completed various races in North America like the 1996 Olympic Road Trials, The Tour de Beauce, 4th place stage in the Tour de Saguenay and several top 8 results at the National Time Trials. He prefers Criterium racing, and has won the Comox Criterium, placed 2nd just behind Roland Green in the Bastion Square Victoria Criterium and placed 2nd in Portland's Grand Prix Pro Criterium. He was also the final cog in the formidable lead out machine that often assisted Mike Haponiuk win many more criteriums!

Dan was away from the ERTC for a few years, when he did such crazy things as live in small town Alberta, and bike the world for a year fully loaded touring with Tonia. They have bike toured in 26 countries, and in all the world's major mountain ranges, but he still doesn't like racing uphill. He does however, now have a particular affection for sticky rice, squat toilets and camping for free. He decided to race again in 2004, but to only train by cycle commuting to work. This training regimen is much better for family time, but makes races seem much harder. The ABA declined his Cat 4 license request and gave him back his Category 1 license. That was probably alright, as he then won the silver medal in the Provincial Criterium Championship for Cat 1/2! He then led the team to float down the Bow River. He will probably be seen on various criterium courses again this year, or maybe on a loaded touring bike somewhere, or maybe just floating down some river on an inner tube.

Stephen Mundy

Stephen joined the ERTC in 1999 and started racing in 2000. Being the CEO of an emerging High Tech Telecommunications company, my time was at premium and something had to give, thus I retreated from racing for approximately two years. I reemerged in 2004 with a fresh prospective on racing and achieved most if not all of my racing goals in 2004, one of which was a consistent top 5 finisher in each and every race. The other was obtaining my upgrade to Category 1&2. Thanks to the boys around me for protecting me just when I needed it most and to Coach Corey for his tireless efforts and encouraging words.

Before joining ERTC Kyle could be found most days running or mountain biking on the many trails of the river valley or commuting to and from the University of Alberta twelve months of the year. He wanted to get into road racing because of the high speeds and team tactics of racing.

Kyle is currently completing his third year of education at the University of Alberta and also plays drums for the local rock group Hazeldean. Kyle hopes to place well in races and continually improve as a cyclist.

In May of 1998 I decided to become a better mountain biker, which meant getting in better shape and learning some fundamental bike handling skills. On an old mountain bike casually dressed (as in the photo) I went for a Thursday night hill ride with the ERTC.

Now I'm gaining incredible cycling fitness on the road which carries over directly to the mountain bike. Thanks to everyone in the club; your support, encouragement, and friendship have made me feel like a part of the team.

Liz Ariano

I started racing in 2004 after my husband entered me in the Ardrossan Stage race behind my back. I've been hooked ever since. I previously competed in triathlons for about 10 years. I am a mother of 3 children (the 3rd to come in July 2005) and practice part time sports and family medicine.

Her cycling experience is mostly in triathlon, but she has done a few Alberta time trials, as well as a mountain bike race and some local TT's and criteriums back in BC. Kelly's favorite club ride is on Wednesday night, but she is learning to enjoy the Thursday hill circuit.

Kelly's goals include running a sub-3 hour marathon in Victoria, doing at least one road race, trying out cyclocross in the fall, and cracking the top 3 at the Canadian Birkebeiner. When she is not playing outside, Kelly works full-time as an emergency RN.

Rachelle Van Zanten

I am a touring/recording rock musician who also loves to ride bikes. I have been a serious mountain biker for the last five years and have just now got into road riding. Due to my extensive traveling, I have had the pleasure of riding in 38 States of America, Iceland, Belgium, Holland, Germany, and every province of Canada. My only race ever ridden was the TransRockies 2004. It hurt but I finished.

When not on a bike, 42-year-old Jeff is in front of a computer. He has been riding seriously for over 20 years and joined ERTC in 1984. Since 1986 he has been club Secretary and is active at the provincial level. His favourite race is any one in which he's a factor. By the way, the bike in the picture is for sale.
  • 8th: 1998 Alberta Provincial Road Race (cat 4)
  • 10th: 1998 Giovanni Caboto Criterium (cat 4)

Tom McKee

Member from 1985 - 2002

Tom's been an ERTC member since 1991 and is currently serving as the ERTC's treasurer, as well as Vice President of Administration of the Alberta Bicycle Association. Tom's approach to cycling can best be described as "equipment-intensive". As Tom has often stated: "If I ever get that midnight call from Giuseppe Saronni asking me to race in the Tour de France, I don't want to be down on equipment".

Tom is focusing his efforts on track racing with a goal of becoming a sprinter in his declining years. When not on his bike, Tom works as a Chartered Accountant.

Peter Toth

Peter's favorite events are criteriums on the road and the points race on the track. Peter accomplished his goal for 1998 by winnint the silver medal in the points race on the track at the World Master's Games. Peter is the current Canadian record holder in the 5 kilometer individual time trial on the track, and former record holder in the 10 and 20 kilo time trial.

Peter is a professional engineer who owns High-Q Design Ltd, a company which manufactures and designs custom electric heaters. Call him at (403) 450-4848.

Bob Burden

Bob is a partner in Serecon Management Consulting Inc., and fits his work schedule around the more important activity of looking for jerseys to match his bike, or bikes to match his jerseys. Having been a member of the ERTC since 1983, he has had the good fortune of meeting and riding with a number of great people many of whom have become close friends. While enjoying road racing, he has more recently turned his focus back to the track, where the gearing is a little simpler to figure out and the beer is always closer.

Bob’s most successful cycling experience was meeting his wife Nancy in 1986, scoring big points due to his shaved legs, cool leather helmet, and matching jersey (of course). His proudest accomplishment is the fact that he still looks forward to riding his bike on the quiet roads in the Edmonton area even after all these years of training. Bob believes that cycling is a lifetime sport, and love to see all of the masters and vets out racing at the EVCA events where the focus is on the people racing and not just the race. People like Maurice Johnson should be an inspiration to everyone who rides a bike.

Richard Mead

member from 1985 - 2000

Richard is a finance manager for a social services organization who started cycling over 20 years ago. He had to stop due to recurring knee problems from a motorcycle accident.

in the early 1980's. Some revolutionary surgical techniques fixed the knees and the cycling has ended a "near fatal" addiction to DQ Blizzards (loss of 9 kilos and counting). Rich will be able to concentrate on riding after acing the CMA exam in June of 1999.

Heinrich de Jongh
